Types of SEO: on-page, off-page, technical and local explained

SEO course › Part 1: SEO foundations

The four main types of SEO are on-page SEO, off-page SEO, technical SEO and local SEO. On-page SEO improves the content of your pages, off-page SEO builds your reputation through links and mentions, technical SEO helps search engines crawl and index your site, and local SEO helps nearby customers find your business.

The main types of SEO work together in one plan

In this lesson you will learn what each type of SEO covers, see examples for a small business, and understand how they fit together into one plan.

Why is SEO split into different types?

Search engine optimization covers a lot of ground, from writing headings to fixing server errors. Splitting it into types makes the work easier to plan and share.

A content writer might focus on on-page SEO, while a developer handles technical SEO. In a small business, one person often does all of it, so knowing the types helps you avoid gaps.

The types overlap. They are not separate strategies but different parts of one job: helping people find useful pages through search. New to SEO? Begin with what SEO is and why it matters.

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO means improving the things on your own web pages that you control directly. The goal is to make each page clearly useful for a topic and easy for search engines to understand.

On-page SEO includes:

  • Writing helpful content that matches what searchers want (their search intent).
  • Using your main keyword naturally in the title, headings and opening paragraph.
  • Writing a clear title tag and meta description, the text that often appears in search results.
  • Adding descriptive alt text to images so search engines and screen readers know what they show.
  • Linking to related pages on your own site (internal links).

For example, a dental clinic in Pune could create a page called “Root canal treatment in Pune: cost, steps and recovery” that answers the questions patients actually ask.

What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO covers actions that happen outside your website but affect how search engines see it. The biggest part is earning backlinks, which are links from other websites to yours.

Google has said that links help it discover pages and understand how pages relate to each other. SEO professionals widely believe links from trusted, relevant sites are an important ranking signal.

Off-page SEO also includes brand mentions, reviews, social media activity and digital PR (getting coverage in news sites and blogs). An online saree shop might earn links by being featured in a fashion blogger’s festival shopping guide.

Buying links or joining link schemes breaks Google’s rules. We cover this in the lesson on white hat vs black hat SEO.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, crawl, render and index your pages without problems. Crawling means a search engine bot visiting your pages; indexing means storing them so they can appear in results.

Technical SEO includes:

  • A clean site structure with logical URLs.
  • An XML sitemap that lists your important pages.
  • A robots.txt file that tells bots which areas to avoid.
  • Fast loading speed and good Core Web Vitals, Google’s measures of loading, responsiveness and visual stability.
  • A mobile-friendly design, since Google mainly uses the mobile version of a site for indexing.
  • HTTPS security and fixing broken links and redirect chains.

Even brilliant content cannot rank if Google cannot crawl or index it. Learn more in our lesson on how search engines crawl websites.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO helps businesses with a physical location or service area appear in local searches, such as “tiffin service near me” or “AC repair in Gachibowli”.

The heart of local SEO is your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows in Google Maps and the local pack. Other parts include consistent name, address and phone details across directories, genuine customer reviews and location pages on your website.

A home bakery in Hyderabad that does not have a shop front can still set up a profile as a service-area business.

How do the types of SEO compare?

You will also hear about other types, such as e-commerce SEO, international SEO, mobile SEO and content SEO. These are mostly specialised mixes of the four core types.

Which type of SEO should you start with?

For most small websites, work in this order:

  1. Check the technical basics: make sure your pages load, work on mobile and can be indexed.
  2. Improve on-page SEO on your most important pages.
  3. Set up local SEO if you serve customers in a specific area.
  4. Build off-page signals slowly by creating content worth linking to and sharing.

Content is the thread that runs through all four. Our guide to content marketing shows how to plan it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing only on keywords and ignoring technical problems that block indexing.
  • Chasing backlinks before your pages are good enough to deserve them.
  • Leaving your Google Business Profile incomplete or out of date.
  • Treating each type of SEO as a one-time task instead of ongoing work.

Key takeaways

  • The four main types of SEO are on-page, off-page, technical and local.
  • On-page SEO improves your content; off-page SEO builds trust from other sites.
  • Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl and index your pages.
  • Local SEO matters most for businesses serving a specific city or area.
  • The types overlap and work best together as one SEO plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of SEO is most important?

No single type is most important, because they depend on each other. A technically sound site with poor content will struggle, and so will great content that Google cannot index.

Is local SEO only for shops with an address?

No. Service-area businesses, such as plumbers or home bakers who visit or deliver to customers, can also use local SEO through a Google Business Profile.

Can I do all types of SEO myself?

Yes, for a small website most tasks are learnable, and free tools like Google Search Console help. You may need a developer for deeper technical fixes.
