AI Overviews are short AI summaries that appear above normal Google results. AI Mode is a separate tab where the whole search becomes a conversation with Google’s AI. Both use pages from Google’s index, but AI Mode asks many sub-questions at once and gives longer, more detailed answers, so it rewards deeper content.
Many people use the two names as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference matters for how you plan content and measure results. Here is a clear comparison and a plan to optimise for both.
The quick comparison
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | On top of the normal results page, for some searches | A separate “AI Mode” tab or entry point |
| What you see | A short summary with a few source links | A full AI answer page with follow-up questions |
| Typical query | A normal search, often a question | Longer, detailed questions (about 3x longer, per Google) |
| How it searches | Summarises top relevant sources | Splits the question into many sub-searches (“query fan-out”) |
| Normal blue links | Still shown below | Mostly replaced by cited sources inside the answer |
| Reach in 2026 | About 2.5 billion users | Over 1 billion monthly users |
User figures are from Google, as compiled by Position Digital in 2026.
How AI Overviews work
AI Overviews appear when Google’s systems think a summary would help. Google writes a short answer from several pages and shows links to them. The rest of the results page stays the same, so traditional rankings still matter a lot. Ahrefs found that 38% of AI Overview citations also rank in Google’s top 10, and that an AI Overview can reduce clicks to the first result by more than half.
What this means: AI Overviews compete with your snippet. You win by being one of the cited sources, and by giving searchers a reason to click for more than the summary offers.
How AI Mode works
AI Mode is built for questions that need more than a quick answer. Google describes a “query fan-out” technique: it breaks your question into sub-topics, runs many searches at the same time, and combines the results into one answer. You can then ask follow-ups, add a photo or speak your question.
Two findings from Growth Memo’s 2026 research stand out. AI Mode cites sources in about three out of four answers, but names brands far less often. And most users accept the AI’s shortlist without checking elsewhere. Being cited inside AI Mode is close to being the recommendation.
What this means: AI Mode looks for pages that cover a topic completely, including the follow-up questions. A page that only answers the headline question may be cited once and then passed over.
How to optimise for AI Overviews
- Rank first. Strong traditional SEO is still the main route into AI Overviews.
- Answer in the first two sentences. Put a direct, quotable answer under each question heading.
- Use clean structure. Short paragraphs, lists and simple tables are easy to summarise.
- Earn the click. Offer what a summary cannot: tools, templates, examples, data or step-by-step detail.
- Target question keywords. Use question keywords that match how people actually ask.
How to optimise for AI Mode
- Cover the full journey. For each main topic, answer the likely follow-ups: cost, time, comparisons, risks, alternatives and next steps.
- Build topic clusters. Link a pillar page to detailed supporting pages, so the fan-out searches keep finding you.
- Name your brand clearly. Use your brand name naturally in headings, author bios and examples, so the AI can connect the answer to you.
- Show experience. First-hand examples, original data and named authors make your page the trusted source among many.
- Keep facts current. Update dates, prices and figures. Long, detailed answers expose outdated information quickly.
- Be present off-site. YouTube, Reddit and Facebook are among the most-cited sources in Google’s AI answers, according to Ahrefs. Helpful videos and genuine community answers increase your chances.
What stays the same for both
- Google only uses pages it can crawl and index. Check robots.txt, canonicals and indexing first.
- Structured data must match what users can see on the page.
- Helpful, people-first content is the basis of both features. Thin pages made only for AI are a spam risk.
- Page speed and mobile usability still affect how Google crawls and ranks your pages.
How to measure results
- Search Console: clicks and impressions from AI features are counted inside the normal performance report. Watch impressions for question queries and long queries.
- Branded searches: growth in searches for your brand name often follows AI mentions.
- GA4: AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks arrive as google / organic. Track other assistants with a custom AI channel in GA4.
- Manual checks: once a month, run your top ten questions in AI Mode and note which sources it cites.
Is AI Mode available in India?
Yes. AI Mode launched in India in June 2025. In October 2025 Google added seven Indian languages (Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu) and launched Search Live, which lets people ask questions using their phone camera. If your audience is in India, consider answering key questions in the languages your customers use.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews is a short AI summary shown above the normal Google results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience where the whole page is an AI answer and you can ask follow-up questions.
Do I need different content for AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Mostly no. Both draw on pages Google can crawl and index. Clear, answer-first pages help with both. AI Mode rewards extra depth, because it splits questions into many sub-questions and looks for pages that cover them.
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Clicks and impressions from Google’s AI features are counted inside the normal Search Console performance report, not as a separate source. You cannot see them in GA4 either, where they appear as google / organic.
Is AI Mode available in India?
Yes. AI Mode launched in India in June 2025, and in October 2025 Google added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews or AI Mode?
You can use the nosnippet or max-snippet robots rules to limit what Google shows from a page, but this also limits normal search snippets. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove pages from AI Overviews or AI Mode, because those are part of Google Search.
