Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring your content so that search engines and AI assistants can pick it up as a direct answer. Instead of only aiming for a blue link on page one, you aim to be the answer shown in Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, the People Also Ask box, and voice assistants like Google Assistant.
If you already understand basic SEO, AEO is the next step. It uses the same foundations, but it changes how you write each section of a page.
Why AEO matters now
More searches now end with an answer on the results page itself. Someone asks a question, Google shows a short summary or an AI Overview, and many people never scroll further. If your page is the source of that answer, you still get seen, and often cited with a link. If it is not, a competitor gets that visibility instead.
The good news for small sites is that answer boxes do not always go to the biggest brand. They go to the page with the clearest, most direct answer to that exact question.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?
- SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in the normal list of search results.
- AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content get pulled out as a direct answer, such as a featured snippet, an AI Overview or a spoken reply.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) helps your brand and pages get mentioned and cited by AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
They overlap heavily. A page with strong SEO is much more likely to be used for AEO and GEO, because answer engines mostly draw from pages they already trust. You can read more about the foundations in our SEO guide for beginners.
Where your answers can appear
- Featured snippets: the highlighted answer box at the top of some Google results.
- People Also Ask: the expandable list of related questions.
- AI Overviews: Google’s AI-written summary, which links to the pages it used.
- Voice assistants: spoken answers, which usually come from a short, clear passage on one page.
How to write content answer engines can use
1. Use the real question as a heading
Write headings the way people actually ask, such as ‘How long does SEO take to work?’ rather than ‘SEO timelines’. Look at the People Also Ask box and Google’s autocomplete for the exact wording.
2. Answer in the first two sentences
Put a direct answer of roughly 40 to 60 words straight under the heading. Then add detail, examples and exceptions below it. Answer engines look for a short passage that makes sense on its own.
3. Keep each passage self-contained
Avoid answers that depend on earlier paragraphs, like ‘As mentioned above, it does.’ Name the subject again so the passage still makes sense if it is lifted out alone.
4. Use lists and steps where they fit
Processes work best as numbered steps and options work best as short bullet lists. These formats are easy for Google to turn into list snippets.
5. Define terms in plain words
A one-sentence definition, written as ‘X is…’, is one of the most commonly quoted formats. Start any explainer with one.
The technical side of AEO
- Make sure the page is indexed. Check it with the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
- Add structured data. FAQ, Article and Organization schema help machines understand what each section is about.
- Keep pages fast and mobile-friendly. Answer engines favour pages that load well on phones.
- Show who wrote it and when. Clear authorship and a visible updated date build the trust signals Google calls E-E-A-T.
A five-step AEO checklist for this week
- Pick one existing page that already gets some search traffic.
- Open Search Console and find the questions people search to reach it.
- Add a heading for the top question and a direct 40 to 60 word answer below it.
- Add two or three related questions in a short Quick answers section at the end.
- Check again in four to six weeks to see if impressions for those questions grew.
How to tell if AEO is working
In Search Console, filter your queries for question words like how, what, why and best. Watch whether impressions and clicks for those queries grow. You can also search your target questions yourself and note whether your page appears in a snippet, the People Also Ask box or an AI Overview. Quick answers
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO. SEO helps a page rank, while AEO shapes each section so it can be used as a direct answer. You need both, and good SEO makes AEO much easier.
Do I need special tools for AEO?
No. Google Search Console, the People Also Ask box and Google’s autocomplete are enough to find the questions and check your progress.
How long should an AEO answer be?
Aim for a direct answer of about 40 to 60 words right under the question, then add more detail below for readers who want it.
